melnikov stage identity → 2024
Melnikov Stage is a new theatre in Moscow with a bold, experimental program. The project reflects a contemporary approach while embracing the legacy of avant-garde architecture, which plays a key role in shaping the theatre’s identity.

The visual identity is inspired by the unique architecture of the Rusakov Workers' Club, where the theatre is located. The logo echoes the building’s three distinctive cantilevered volumes, which also resemble a gear — a symbol of Soviet avant-garde. These three beams additionally reference the “House of Light,” the name originally given to the project by the architect.
The design system is built on carefully considered details — typography pairing, geometric masks, proportions, and composition. This results in a recognizable identity that works seamlessly across both digital platforms and traditional theatre materials such as posters, programs, and tickets.
This visual concept extends across physical media. Graphic blocks used in posters, wayfinding, and outdoor advertising mirror the angles and forms of the logo, creating a cohesive visual language.
A contrasting typeface pair — the balanced grotesque Gramatika and the refined serif Panama — highlights both the theatre’s classical roots and its contemporary artistic direction.
Drawing on constructivist principles and combining functionality, minimalism, and expressive typography, the identity captures the spirit of the theatre’s architectural heritage in both print and digital design.
